NEW YORK (AFX) - The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index was 81.8 in the final September reading, down from 83.6 in the preliminary report. The decline in the final reading for September was not as dramatic as most economists had feared. The consensus forecast of Wall Street economists was for the consumer sentiment index to fall to 78.3.
